I discovered it via excellent Journal Of Curiosities, blog of Chris Kontos. Big Wave is the soundtrack album for the same-tiled surf movie, produced and recorded by Tatsuro Yamashita. It’s interesting that album is linked to The Beach Boys: 4 songs from the B-side are cover versions of their frontman Brian Wilson compositions and the whole album is dedicated to his brother Dennis Wilson, drummer of legendary band from California. The record is full of air, feeling of nostalgia. The production is epic, there are sax solos, screaming high-pitched vocals. Jody is a morning song, Only With You — a night with friends in a bar, it’s a wide ocean cooling after hot day on the beach, it’s a road trip on a big old American car from 80s. There are light sorrow, remembrance, tears with smile on your lips. I’m trying to understand how Tatsuro captured the feeling of standing in front of the ocean, hanging with friends, drinking Coke and thinking, looking on blinding waves and deciding is it a proper time to swim. Maybe it’s because of echoing spacious vocals or using of glockenspiel. Dreaming to play it on a beach or on rooftop party in NYC.
