Weird Radio (real name is Tagir Vagapov) is a Moscow based DJ, musical journalist, author of semi-titled podcast. We heard some stories about his strange and even “weird” DJ sets so we decided to invite him to our topfive series. The guy’s taste is really unusual
It’s a strange German collective we have almost zero information about. We even don’t know the year of release, seems like it was early 80s. The record is a delightful instrumental music on the edge of ambient, dub and new wave, No filler.
This unique 7″ is a second release on Ukrainian-German Baran Records, label now specializing on re-releasing obscure Soviet new wave. Maxim Løy, label owner, and his friend Pavel Golubowski are reinventing acid folk, it’s the only correct term to describe their sound. It’s a perfect combination of excellent Balearic guitar melody and 303’s solo
Brenda Ray and her ally Sir Freddie Viadukt recorded a lot of great music, but my favorite period of their project is Naffi. Clever pop music with a twist of dub, simple and addictive songs. Also want to admit EM Records, their re-releases are killers, this one is one of my faves.
Rock Critics — T.V. Show LP [1982, Upon Tyne]
Discogs / No Youtube
I collected almost all vinyl releases of French musician Luc Marianni, and can pick any of it here. DDD label attracted attention to the work of Marianni with some unreleased stuff and remixes from O B Ignitt, Jared Wilson, Bass Clef and others. So why did I pick T.V. Show? Because of its title and cover of course 🙂
Sexy Merlin — Sexy Merlin 7″ [2011, Pleasence]
No Discogs / Bandcamp
I bought all three vinyls of Sexy Merlin (included famous Heater 12″). And this 7″ introduced me to the work of extraordinary musician. Percussionist and drummer with freak haircut, played in a lot of bands in Toronto, showed his potential in solo career. Mutant disco with compliments to Arthur Russell and Dennis Young, rough and very contagious.
